Comics Graduate Seminar

On Tuesday September 6th we were lucky to be part of the first ever graduate seminar sponsored by the Obermann Center. The focus of our seminar is comics. Students are reading works by each the comics creators we have invited to campus.

Exhibition: Graphic Language

Event: Name Class Act Comics Conference for Youth

Date: October 5th, 2011

Place: Black Box Theatre (exhibition space), UIMA gallery, Main Lounge at IMU

Time frame: 9:00-1:00 p.m. (Middle School)

1:00p.m.-4:00p.m. (High School)

Description: An event open to middle and high school students in the greater Iowa City region that highlights the artistry of the graphic novel medium through The University of Iowa Museum of Art’s exhibition,Graphic Language. The event will also expose the students to current graphic novel artists and will allow them to explore their own “graphic language” through hands-on workshops.

Comics Creativity and Culture: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives

The Obermann Humanities Symposium in Fall 2011 is focused on comics. Organizers Corey Creekmur, Ana Merino, and Rachel Williams will collaborate with partners across campus and across Iowa City to bring together international scholars and artists to discuss comics -- broadly defined to include comic strips, comic books, and graphic novels – in order to foster dynamic exchange between the creative practices of making and publishing comics and the critical practice of analyzing the cultural function of comics for diverse readers around the world.
